Plan 13 (Flush to Suction)
Why do we use it?
- When the seal heat requires a continuous flush flow to cool the seal
- On a vertical pump which requires venting of the seal chamber
- When the pressure differential between chamber and suction is enough to generate sufficient flush flow
- When the process fluid contains minimal abrasives
- When the process fluid is far enough away from the vapour pressure limit and seal temperature limits for good seal operation
Advantages:
With a Plan 13 it is possible to control seal chamber pressure with proper sizing of the orifice and throat bushing clearance.
General:
Typically Plan 13 is used on vertical pumps since they have the discharge at the top of the pump where the seal is located. Because of the difference in flow patterns, Plan 13 is not as efficient in removing heat as a Plan 11 and thus requires a higher flow rate.
