IN MORE DETAIL

What is a split mechanical seal?

A split mechanical seal can be installed and replaced without having to dismantle any of the equipment.

They come in two separate pieces, unlike ordinary cartridge mechanical seals, which, when joined together, create a proper seal around the shaft.

What types of applications are split seals suitable for?

Using split mechanical seals can reduce hours of labour, downtime and additional complexity, therefore decreasing cost. Split seals can be used in these industries:

  • Mining and minerals
  • Power generation
  • Pulp and paper processing
  • Wastewater and clean water management

This is due to the large equipment in these industries requiring a large amount of time for disassembly and repair. It’s important to note that split mechanical seals have an increased amount of potential leak areas, so they are not suitable for certain industries.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Common questions

How do split seals work?

Split seals are designed in two halves, each containing a sealing face (carbon or silicon carbide), a holder and elastomers. When bolted together around the shaft, they create a leak-proof barrier. The two halves are aligned, clamped tightly to ensure proper face contact and rotate together to prevent fluid leakage.

Do split seals work on worn or pitted shafts?

Split seals can work on worn or pitted shafts. Their design allows the seal to compensate for minor surface imperfections, helping maintain reliable sealing without requiring shaft replacement. However, excessive damage may still require repair. John Crane’s split mechanical seals are engineered to deliver strong performance even in challenging conditions.

What are the key features of a split seal?

Split mechanical seals have a two-part design, and their halves join up with precision engineering to create a mechanical seal with no disassembly. You can install split seals directly onto existing setups, saving time and resources on dismantling.
