Plan 41 (Cooled Separator)

Inboard
Plan 41 is a combination of Plan 21 and Plan 31. In Plan 41, product from pump discharge is first put through an abrasive separator and then to the heat exchanger before being introduced to the seal chamber.
Plan 41

Why do we use it?

  • When the seal heat requires a continuous flush flow to cool the seal
  • When the process fluid contains abrasives with higher density than the process fluid
  • When the process fluid is too hot for good seal operation without additional cooling
  • When pump ΔP is greater than 1 bar (15 psi) and less than 14 bar (210 psi)

Advantages:

Solids are removed and product temperature is reduced to enhance the seal’s environment.

General:

Plan 41 is typically used on hot services with solids however, depending on the temperature of the process, operating costs can be high. Orifices may be used to optimize flow rates and separation efficiency.
