How advanced sealing solutions enhance mining equipment reliability
In the first part of our blog, we looked at the technologies that can enhance equipment reliability in the mining and minerals industry.
We discussed how intensive operations, such as slurry and dewatering circuits, pumping, extraction, processing and operations in remote, exposed environments, can compromise performance and reduce operational uptime.
However, John Crane solutions can support rotating equipment in every form. That includes the shaft seals, agitators, mixers, conveyor belts, gearboxes, grinding mills, pumps of many sizes, crushers, fans, drilling rigs and hoist systems on which our customers depend. Current innovations include mechanical seals and seal face technology.
In this blog, we will discuss the role of seal support systems, couplings and digital monitoring.
Seal support systems: Behind successful mining operations
Mining and mineral extraction operations often take place in remote, harsh mining environments. Mechanical seals must operate at the edge of their capabilities, and operators can help extend machinery uptime by using seal support systems. Our barrier fluid reservoirs, heat exchangers and flush systems support optimal mechanical seal performance.
Our portfolio offers enhanced safety around critical pumps and hazardous fluids, and each solution complies with ASME VIII, ASME B31.3, AD2000, ATEX, CE, PED and SELO as required.
What makes a good support system?
In the context of the mining and minerals industry, support systems must be (a) robust, (b) simple to run and, crucially, help every seal last longer in the context of lubrication and cooling challenges.
For example, the John Crane Safeunit Ultima delivers a continuous, adjustable pressurised flush to prevent solids from entering the seal chamber and create a complete seal, with a water control and monitoring system.
Similarly, the Global Standardised Upstream Pumping Support System (GS USP) manages the flow of clean water to optimise the performance of any John Crane dual mechanical seal using USP face technology.
The GS 54 Pump Seal Support System is a best-practice solution that significantly reduces specification review and delivery schedules. Meanwhile, John Crane SafeJet is our automatic, compact, in-line seal water filter. It uses our ‘flow-through’ filter technology, which employs several laminar filter elements for self-cleaning.
Our intelligent water control system for mechanical seals, John Crane Smartflow, uses seal water only when the mechanical seal requires cooling, helping companies improve sustainability and meet ESG goals.
Couplings: Power transmission with precision
For mining operators, power transmission coupling choice depends on multiple factors. They include torque, equipment being connected, speed and bearing arrangement, degree of misalignment, operational environment and available space; all dictate coupling choice or influence decision-making.
But the overarching principle is that the coupling must support smooth torque transmission and accommodate misalignment to improve seal performance. Whether rigid, elastomeric, disc or diaphragm, every type of power transmission coupling is designed for a particular application and operating condition.
John Crane’s Powerstream® elastomeric couplings use an elastomeric element to transmit torque, manage vibration and accommodate misalignment. Crucially for the mining industry, engineers can replace these urethane elastomers in minutes, reducing downtime on ANSI pumps, conveyors, rolls, fans and blowers.
Designed for high torque, misalignment tolerance and zero maintenance, the John Crane’s Metastream® L Series range is a cost-effective coupling solution for conveyor systems, crushers, mills, large dewatering pumps, fans and excavator drivetrains and hoists.
Pre-assembled to reduce installation issues, these ATEX-certified metallic membranes help to protect equipment against angular, lateral and axial misalignment. Ideal for pumps, compressors and gearboxes, these reliable and maintenance-free flexible disc couplings can help reduce plant costs and downtime.
Similarly, the Metastream® C Series rigid couplings are optimised for vertical applications like mixers and agitators. Available in four formats, they incorporate a segmented, piloted locating design. This eliminates the shaft distortion associated with conventional coupling designs.
Digital monitoring supports sustainability initiatives
Effective couplings, sealing and support systems contribute to ESG goals – specifically environmental concerns – through water conservation and more efficient energy use, while reducing emissions and waste. However, they are simply incremental improvements on well-established analogue technologies.
Digital technology can also help companies achieve both sustainability and business goals by integrating smart monitoring into their operations. John Crane Sense® Monitor adds predictive maintenance to the list of solutions supporting industry efforts to work better, cleaner and safer for longer.
Plant owners using John Crane Sense Monitor for plant-wide monitoring can remotely track the health of their rotating equipment in the extreme environments common in mining and minerals. A data-driven approach supports informed decision-making around plant technology downtime and maintenance, while keeping people out of harm’s way.
From packing to digital monitoring: A sealing journey
Exploration is a key element of mining, and just as our customers will always be looking for new opportunities, John Crane continues to introduce innovative solutions to the industry’s widest range of mechanical seals. It is this technology, along with our support systems, couplings and remote digital monitoring solutions, which helps to create fully integrated solutions that enhance operational reliability and sustainability.
Whatever the activity, and wherever the location, mining and minerals processing is an always-on industry that values uptime and avoids unscheduled downtime. However, opportunities to improve operational performance exist. The key is knowing what to upgrade, and when, to maximise the benefit and minimise disruption.
