Plan 53C (Piston Accumulator)
Why do we use it?
- When an arrangement 3 plan is required
- When the required barrier fluid is more than 10 bar (145 psi) where gas entrainment may be an issue, and is high enough to operate a piston accumulator
- When a supply of inert gas (N2) or a power supply is unavailable at the pump location
- When the shaft speed is too low for a non-contacting gas seal or the process is incompatible with gas injection
- When the seal chamber pressure may be variable throughout operation
- When the inboard seal is not rated for high static loads
- When the process fluid does not contain many solids which might clog up a piston
Advantages:
Provides a tracking system to maintain barrier pressure above seal chamber pressure.
General:
The heat exchanger can be water cooled, finned tubing or an air-cooled unit based upon the system heat load. The reference line to the accumulator must be tolerant of process contamination without plugging.
