Plan 53C (Piston Accumulator)

Plan 53C uses a piston accumulator to provide pressure to the system. It uses a reference line from the seal chamber to provide a constant pressure differential over the chamber’s pressure. A water or air-cooled heat exchanger provides for barrier fluid cooling. Flow is induced by a pumping ring.

Why do we use it?

  • When an arrangement 3 plan is required
  • When the required barrier fluid is more than 10 bar (145 psi) where gas entrainment may be an issue, and is high enough to operate a piston accumulator
  • When a supply of inert gas (N2) or a power supply is unavailable at the pump location
  • When the shaft speed is too low for a non-contacting gas seal or the process is incompatible with gas injection
  • When the seal chamber pressure may be variable throughout operation
  • When the inboard seal is not rated for high static loads
  • When the process fluid does not contain many solids which might clog up a piston

Advantages:

Provides a tracking system to maintain barrier pressure above seal chamber pressure.

General:

The heat exchanger can be water cooled, finned tubing or an air-cooled unit based upon the system heat load. The reference line to the accumulator must be tolerant of process contamination without plugging.
