Introducing part two of our Summer Intern Spotlight Series!
Our John Crane interns are continuing to have a busy summer. They recently had the opportunity to travel to John Crane’s downtown Chicago headquarters to visit with senior leadership.
During their visit, the interns had a luncheon with members of John Crane’s executive team where they were able to gain expert career advice and valuable industry insights.
After the luncheon, the interns went on an architecture boat tour on the Chicago River where they were able to soak in the sights of the city, as well as take in the history of the city’s famous buildings and landmarks.
Read the following Q&As with our interns to learn more about them, what projects they’ll be working on this summer and why they chose John Crane, as well as some fun facts and hidden talents.
Alejandra Velasquez — Morton Grove, IL
Alejandra is currently a student at the University of Illinois at Chicago majoring in industrial engineering. Alejandra is a training coordinator intern at John Crane.
What projects are you currently working on?
My responsibilities include assisting with scheduling, planning, and preparing classrooms and coordinating customer trainings. My focus is assisting the Spanish-speaking sector.
Why did you choose John Crane?
The training position is a great opportunity for me to gain exposure to the manufacturing and supplier/customer relationship. I also have the opportunity to be close to the highly engineered products that John Crane is a global leader for.
Upon graduation, what career path do you plan to take?
When I graduate, I’d like to work in the industrial or manufacturing engineering field.
Share a fun fact about yourself.
I can make a full breakfast in less than five minutes—eggs, bacon, cereal and coffee.
What is your favorite summer activity/hobby?
I love having picnics on the beach with lots of fruits and snacks.
Joanna Tan — Morton Grove, IL
Joanna is currently a student at the University of Illinois at Chicago majoring in mechanical engineering. Joanna is a mechanical engineering intern at John Crane.
What projects are you currently working on?
I’m drafting and designing an upstream pump demonstrator, performing static torque tests on prototype primary and mating rings, and surface roughness testing the behavior of various O-rings on adaptive hardware.
Why did you choose John Crane?
I chose John Crane because I was interested in the products the company develops, as well as the overall goals it strives to achieve. I have previously worked on research that related to diminishing the emissions leaked into the atmosphere with an intent of sustainability and reliability. I am proud to work for a company that seeks to achieve these goals!
What is one thing that you hope to take away from your internship?
One thing that I’d like to take away from my internship experience is learning new skills that I will be able to apply and use in the professional engineering field.
Upon graduation, what career path do you plan to take?
I would ideally like to work in the energy industry to do research, design and/or product development.
Share a fun fact about yourself.
I can play every Guitar Hero, Rock Band and Dance Dance Revolution game on expert mode.
What is your favorite summer activity/hobby?
I love rollerblading outside or eating at summer barbecues.
Jeremy Steegmueller — Morton Grove, IL
Jeremy is currently a student at Northern Illinois University majoring in mechanical engineering, as well as minoring in both math and computer science. Jeremy is a mechanical engineering intern at John Crane.
What projects are you currently working on?
I’m working on a demonstrator for John Crane’s Up-Stream Pumping technology, which will be used as part of technology demonstrations and career fairs.
Why did you choose John Crane?
The company was recommended to me by a close family friend, and upon more research, I found what the work John Crane does with mechanical seals to be very interesting.
What is one thing that you hope to take away from your internship?
I hope to learn more about the mechanical engineering field, and what I have to look forward to in a related career after I graduate.
Upon graduation, what career path do you plan to take?
I hope to go into some form of mechanical engineering, similar to the types of engineering jobs offered at John Crane.
Share a fun fact about yourself.
I trained in taekwondo for three years and achieved my black belt. I also love music and can currently play 10 different instruments fairly well.
What is your favorite summer activity/hobby?
I enjoy playing volleyball and videogames.
Sravas Jammula — Morton Grove, IL
Sravas is currently a student at North Carolina State University majoring in mechanical engineering with a minor in graphic design. Sravas is currently an engineering systems intern at John Crane.
What projects are you currently working on?
I’m creating gland templates, checking metal bellows assemblies and creating materials for solid edge training.
Why did you choose John Crane?
I was actually an intern at John Crane last year in the same position I’m in now. I really enjoyed working here, and there is so much more to learn about mechanical seals.
What is one thing that you hope to take away from your internship?
I want to gain more knowledge and experience in working with 3D modeling and design.

I am passionate about photography and love taking photos.
What is your favorite summer activity/hobby?
I enjoy taking long road trips in the summer and riding my motorcycle.
