UK Parliament Visit for Global Innovator John Crane
03 July 2014
World-leading pioneer in the energy service industries, John Crane, has showcased its innovative Oil Plus upstream dedicated water management solution at the prestigious Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) for Britain event.
John Crane was invited to the event, which took place at the Houses of Parliament, after a case study illustrating the effectiveness of the service was shortlisted for the SET for Britain awards.
Part of a competition by SET to showcase industry achievements; the event saw Oil Plus promote its approach to addressing ‘slime’ issues at a water treatment plant for an onshore oil field in Trinidad.
To secure its place on the SET for Britain shortlist, John Crane demonstrated how its Oil Plus solution was able to identify the origin of the problem, which was causing a severe impact on operations to treat and dispose of produced water, a byproduct of onshore oil extraction, and then recommend an appropriate regime to address it.
Dr Richard Johnson, Senior Technologist at Oil Plus, conducted a series of analytical chemical and molecular microbial tests to identify the substance as a slime-producing algae. It was determined that this problem had been caused by a number of biological and non-biological factors, such as the impact of storm drains and sunlight exposure. The results of the tests enabled Oil Plus to devise a strategy to control and mitigate the build-up of algae through a series of treatment options.
Johnson commented: “It was an honor to be shortlisted for this award and to be invited to the House of Commons. We are incredibly proud of the work we do at Oil Plus and to be recognized by the Parliamentary and Scientific Committee for our achievements overseas is testament to our commitment to innovation and best practice within the industry.”
The SET for Britain event was organized by Andrew Miller MP to recognize and promote Britain’s research scientists, engineers, technologists and mathematicians.
